Job Description

Contributes toward the overall reliability and quality of electric service to URE members by performing effective operations and maintenance activities for substations and all distribution automation equipment.

Job Responsibilities:
• Maintains a high degree of reliable electric service to Honda and other members by performing regular substation and distribution equipment inspections, operations, and maintenance activities in accordance with the Cooperative’s Safety rules, regulations, and practices.
• Assists in the training and development of the Operations and Engineering departments to promote the safe operation of Honda and URE substations.
• Accomplishes departmental goals by performing assigned tasks related to substation, delivery points, and distribution automation equipment.
• Performs the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, repair and operation of substation facilities and automation equipment energized at 0-138,000 volts.
• Performs the execution of formal switching orders as issued by the Engineering Department.
• Assists with maintaining the Cooperative’s communications system.
• Maintain maintenance and data records of all substation and distribution equipment.
• Maintain up-to-date prints and diagrams of all equipment.
• Assists with the objective of supporting a safe workplace by maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
• Provides support during major outages by assisting in whatever manner necessary.
• Exercises professional and courteous conduct in dealing with members, contractors, and other employees.
• Assists in achieving a greater degree of teamwork by performing all other duties as assigned.

Job Related Qualifications

Education and Experience:
• Hiring level is commensurate with education, experience, and evaluation to match up with the Union Rural Electrics progression steps from apprentice to Substation and Automation Equipment Technician.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Individuals who are currently enrolled in a Substation Apprenticeship Program are welcome to apply.

Abilities & Skills:
• Must acquire the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next level within such time frame as determined by the Cooperative.
• Must have excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to carry out physical activities associated with the maintenance, construction, and inspection of electrical power substation equipment.
• Reside within 45 minutes of the Cooperative’s headquarters in order to rapidly respond during an emergency is preferred.
• Must possess or capable of obtaining a valid Ohio commercial driver’s license.
• The ability to interpret wiring diagrams, instruction manuals, and possess knowledge of NESC, NEC, and RUS construction standards is preferred.
• Knowledge of oil filled equipment and oil spill response procedures is preferred.
• Be willing to study and broaden his/her knowledge and keep abreast of new techniques and developments in the electric utility field.
• Must be able to work with various software applications on a PC and iPad.
• Must be able to interact effectively with employees, members, and the public in a variety of situations, exercising good judgment and maintaining a positive company image.
• The ability to research and apply information from technical publications in the completion of duties is preferred.
• Must be able to complete a variety of reports and maintain accurate records.
• Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist.

Miscellaneous

Working Conditions:
Normal work hours are from 7:30 – 4:00. A varying amount of fieldwork is required. Additional time outside of normal hours can be expected in dealing with specific projects or electric service interruptions. Inside and outside work in varying weather conditions. Overnight travel for training and seminars is required occasionally.

Equipment Operated:

Must be able to operate various electrical test equipment, controls, substation switches and breakers, regulators, line reclosers and other automation equipment under varying levels of supervision.
