Keep Padmount Transformers Clear: Landscaping Do’s & Don’ts

“Gee, it sure would be great to camouflage that green metal box in my yard,” you might think while planning your next landscaping project.
Wait! That green metal box, called a padmount transformer, plays a vital role in delivering electricity to your home. While you may want to beautify the area around it, taking proper precautions is essential for safety, reliability, and accessibility.
What Is a Padmount Transformer?
A padmount transformer is a locked steel cabinet mounted on a pad that steps down high-voltage electricity from underground power lines to a lower voltage for homes. These transformers are essential components of underground utility systems, ensuring your lights, appliances, and devices receive the electricity they need.
Padmount transformers are typically installed in easements, meaning they must be accessible to Union Rural Electric Cooperative (URE) crews at all times for maintenance or during power outages. Landscaping too close to these units can:
- Slow power restoration during outages.
- Make routine maintenance more difficult.
- Create safety hazards for both residents and URE crews.
Clearance Requirements for Padmount Transformers & Other URE-Owned Equipment
To ensure safety and functionality, URE requires the following clearances around padmount transformers:
- 10 feet in front (the side with the padlock) to allow for safe power disconnection and maintenance.
- 3 feet on all other sides.
Planting trees or shrubs or installing fences too close to a transformer or other URE-owned equipment violates these requirements and can result in URE crews needing to remove obstructions to gain access.
Landscaping & Fencing Guidelines
- Plan before you plant: Keep clearances in mind when designing your landscaping. Avoid planting shrubs or trees too close to the transformer.
- Fences: If you install a fence near a padmount transformer, do not block the front. A gate that swings away from the transformer must be included for accessibility and the fence may need to be connected to the URE ground grid for safety.
- Call before you dig: Always contact 8-1-1 to locate underground utility lines before digging near a transformer — or anywhere in your yard.
Safety Reminders
- Teach kids about safety: Children should not sit on, open, or play around padmount transformers.
- Report damage: If you notice a hole, broken lock, or any damage to the transformer, contact URE immediately.
- Respect the equipment: Padmount transformers contain energized electrical equipment. Do not tamper with, block, or obstruct access to it.
Protecting Your Service & Safety
Even though the transformer might seem like it’s “in your yard,” it is technically in an easement, granting URE crews the right to access it. By respecting clearance guidelines and prioritizing safety, you help ensure reliable power delivery.
